Crane

Crane (Crane 5-53) is the primary protagonist of Neon Eclipse, created by Xander Davis, as an Infinidyne RCS biodrone covert operative.

Declassified History

Crane Generation-5 Unit-53 (Crane 5-53) of the Infinidyne RCS biodrone Crane series was activated by fellow Infinidyne RCS field operative Vicca Rezende as biodrone support for her Echo Team during a Milestone black-op in Xīn Cairo, July 12th, 2044. His activation was requested by Rezende and authorized by Cerys Sinclair from Infinidyne RCS headquarters in Último Cielo.

Like all other Crane models, his AI was designed and incubated by Nuaxon and he is manufactured, owned, and controlled by Nuaxon’s parent company, Infinidyne RCS, a Rivulet Group company.

He joined the team as Echo Zero Four with Edvard Møller and Yveta Lange. While he failed to save their lives during an ambush by Táifēng Syndicate Enforcers shortly after his activation, he did manage to save Rezende’s life in the ensuing battle.

Development

Series Creator and Author Xander Davis first created the concept of ‘Crane’ as his own human spy character back in 2005 in a story that was eventually abandoned.

By Spring of 2014, nine years later when he wrote the novella manuscript Within City Limits that would later become Neon Eclipse by its March 1, 2017 premier, Davis decided to use the name for the protagonist, this time as an android secret agent. He liked the name for how it sounded Anglo-Saxon and monosyllabic like ‘Bond’, but different. It further held metaphoric value as a hand that reaches into the world to retrieve something.

In Within City Limits, Crane originally didn’t know he was an android, believing he was human, until the end of the story. However, once Davis reinvented the property as Neon Eclipse, he decided to make it known to everyone, from the reader to Crane himself, that Crane was an android. He felt that the twist that the protagonist isn’t actually human has been done and it was fresher to acknowledge this fully right from the beginning and embrace it.

This became a central idea on which Neon Eclipse would be driven, giving it a post-human perspective on humanity in a dystopian future.
